Apologies If I Step On Some Toes…
Let’s start here: I’m about to step on some toes. Yours, mine, and probably a few folks who aren't even on this list. But we’ve gotta talk about this.
There’s a moment that sneaks up on so many of us—when you're standing in the kitchen, or on a Zoom call, or staring down your to-do list—and the quiet resentment starts to bubble.
"Why am I the one who always has to handle this?"
"Why does everything fall on me?"
We’re overwhelmed. Angry.
But here’s the truth: it’s our own fault.
Why?
Well... somewhere along the way, we got the message that being overwhelmed was just part of the deal. That carrying the weight of the world was noble.
Let’s call it what it actually is: ego.
Sometimes (not always, but often enough) the root reason why we don’t EVEN THINK of delegating is a little thing called self-importance.
Yep, I said it.
And here’s what it looks like. We think:
No one else can do it like I can.
If I don’t do it, it won’t get done right.
They need me.
Sound familiar?
Whew. Same.
So here's the analogy I want you to sit with:
Imagine you’re hiking a steep trail, backpack loaded down with supplies. At first, you feel strong. Capable. Proud. But then the miles start adding up. Your shoulders ache. You’re slowing down. And finally you look around and realize—you’re not hiking alone. You’ve got a whole caravan with you. And yet, you’re carrying everything yourself.
Why?
Why haven’t you passed the map to someone else?
Why haven’t you let someone else carry the water for a while?
That’s delegation. It means stop being the hero in every story and start being a leader.
Now, I can hear it already:
"Jes, I would delegate, but I don’t have anyone I can trust with the load."
Let me ask you this:
Is that true?
Or is that a story you’ve been telling yourself?
And if it is true—if you really don’t have anyone around you that you can trust—then the work becomes this:
Who should be in your caravan?
Have you trained them?
Are you asking for help in a way that sets people up to succeed?
So... this week, I’m inviting you to burn the superhuman cape. Not because you aren’t powerful—but because real power is shared.
You don’t have to do it all.
You just need to stop hiking like you’re alone.
